Take your drive north out of Flowood on Old Fanon Road and cross the spillway. A few minutes later, you can be riding the Natchez Trace Parkway. No big trucks blocking your view, zero stoplights.
But the Trace isn’t a state road. It belongs to the National Park Service. And that changes what happens if you go down out there.
Who Shows Up if You Crash on The Trace?
You won’t see Flowood police patrolling the parkway. And you won’t see any Rankin County deputies either. Park rangers have federal authority there.
That means an accident on the Trace is written up by the National Park Service, not anybody local. It’s a totally different set of paperwork than if you had the same crash on Lakeland Drive.
MS Rules Do Still Apply on Federal Land

For the Trace, the Park Service took Mississippi’s traffic laws and adopted them as their own. The same rules you follow around town are exactly what you follow when you’re there
That means you still have to wear a helmet when you ride. And you also have to have liability motorcycle insurance on your bike. Just because you are on federal land doesn’t mean it’s a lighter offense if you are driving without the right coverage. It just turns what would normally be a state problem into a federal one.

One step people miss is reporting the crash to the park superintendent within one day. That’s on top of calling your insurance agent and starting your claim.
